Hammers are the important tools, used to drive nails or tacks and break objects apart. The usual features are a handle and a head, with most of the weight in the head. The basic design is hand-operated, but there are also many mechanically operated models for heavier uses.
There are many different types of hammers and all serve a unique purpose. They can vary in their structure, size, and the material of which they are made. Some of the popular ones are:
- Sledgehammer is mainly used on outdoor projects. These are designed to deliver heavy force.
Mason's Hammer, mainly used for working on brick, concrete or mortar. It is often used for cutting and setting brick, and can also be used as a hammer or a chisel when laying brick.
- Mallet is used when restraint is needed. It is a good replacement for steel hammers when concerned about marring a surface. Used for driving chisels and for woodworking. The heads or mallets are usually made of different materials, usually wooden, rubber or plastic.
- Dead blow is used when concerned about marring a surface. It is designed to reduce and eliminate bouncing on contact. Most of them are made of plastic.
- Framing Hammer, a long handled hammer used by carpenters to frame houses. It has a milled face to reduce slipping off nails on contact. It is fairly heavy to drive nails easier.
- Claw Hammer, very similar to a framing hammer but is much lighter. It is a must of a toolbox must and is more of a general use hammer.
- Tack Hammer is designed mainly to use on nailing tacks. It is usually small in size and fairly light, about 5 Oz. Most of them are magnetized to pick up tacks that have fallen.
- Ball Peen Hammer is mainly used for cold chisels and forming metal. It has one side with a ball on it and one side with a smooth face. There are many different sizes of ball pein hammers to choose from.
- Roofing Hammer is a job specific tool. Its face is always milled, often square and the peen will be either a standard sharp hatchet for trimming cedar shingles or equipped with a tiny razor blade for cutting asphalt shingles.
