Automotive Hand Tools Guide

Many automotive tools are similar, if not identical, to household and home improvement tools. Others, however, are specifically designed to perform one or more functions on autos only. We present some basic auto hand tools that you must have even if you are not a car mechanic as you may need to become one when immediate help is not available.
Jack

Jack: A good one, preferably hydraulic is required.

Spade

Lug wrench: Used for opening screws on your vehicle wheels

Spark plug wrench Spark plug wrench: Elementary dear Watson

Oil filter wrench: Special tool just for loosening and installing oil filters

Adjustable wrench:
Two, one smaller and one larger, should be enough

Screwdrivers:
 Minimum two (flat and Phillips head) – strong, to loosen sealed screws

Jumper cables

Jumper cables:  A must-have – never know when your auto might have starting trouble

Strong brush: Non-metal but very stiff – keep battery terminals clean for good contacts

Continuity tester:
 Small tool for testing electrical circuits to find problems

Pliers:
Slip joint and needle nose

Flashlight

Flashlight:  A small one for tight quarters and a larger one to spread light
