One of the most important tools of carpentry, a saw, has been used since ages. Historical evidences have proved that the saws have been in use from Egypt while building pyramids. Today, it has become prominent equipment in various industries as well as households. It is a tool that uses a hard blade or wire with an abrasive edge to cut through softer materials. The cutting edge of a saw is either a serrated or an abrasive.
In the modern serrated saw, each tooth is bent to a precise angle called its "set". The set of the teeth is determined by the kind of cut the saw is intended to make. Some teeth are usually splayed slightly to each side of the blade, so that the cut width is wider than the blade itself and the blade does not bind in the cut.
Similar to other tools, saws are found in different types according to their uses. Here is a list of hand saws and how to use them:
- Crosscut and Ripsaws have the same shape and are made for cutting wood. They cut the wood on the push motion and clean the sawdust out during the pulling motion.
- Backsaw offers smooth, precise cuts from a rectangular blade. It is mostly used on a miter box, so as to make precise 45-degree or 90-degree angles cut.
- Coping Saw is likely the most versatile saw used for design or decoration. It is thin and removable; and is between frames and pinned in.
- Compass Saw looks like a thin, pointed ripsaw. It is used the same way, except in tight or straight places, like walls or keyholes.
- Hacksaw is a multi-purpose saw. It can be used on metal or plastic and can be used from almost any angle.
